Hi,
I’m a little confused…I thought the Independent Music Awards were for independent artists…those artists who do not have record deals. Under the jazz category, you have nominated Sophie Milman and Carol Welsman, who both have had record deals for at least 2 or more years……could you explain why they have been nominated?….thank you.
Irene Atman
So called independent artists are generally signed to independent labels rather than no lables. Carol Welsman released her last album on Justin Time for example, which is a speciality Jazz label. Some acts nominated (such as Sum 41) are actually signed to major labels. Many popular “indie†bands are still seen as independent because of their music style and independent roots despite being on a major label. What it means to be independent is a favourite topic of internet hipsters everywhere – for some it means that you played at the bar down the street from where you go to school, while for others you can have a 8X platinum record and still be independent. Most people feel it is somewhere in the middle.
