Montreal quartet The Barr Brothers’ self-titled album debut is an opus of beautiful folk, gut-busting blues and far-out African rhythms, out Sept 27 on Secret City Records. The 10-song collection features brothers Brad (guitar, keys, vox) and Andrew (drums, percussion) Barr, Miles Perkin on bass and harpist Sarah Page.
From delicate pop melodies to growling delta blues riffs, ‘The Barr Brothers’ boasts a wide-ranging mix, heightened by an array of instruments including classic harp through a fuzz pedal, an air compressor xylophone, a toolbox converted into an electric guitar and more. “Beggar In The Morning” opens the album with a melted ambiance that unfurls into hushed, pensive folk. “Give The Devil Back His Heart” snakes around African thumb piano rhythms, collapsing into a Who-esque flurry of drums. “Cloud (For Lhasa)” is an ethereal waltz, a contrast to the dark, hushed blues that follows in “The Devil’s Harp.”
After a successful CMJ, including a set at the high profile M for Montreal showcase, The Barr Brothers will return to NYC next month for a pair of shows at Joe’s Pub on Dec 7 and Union Pool on Dec 8. On a side note, Montreal rockers and fellow Secret City label mates, Plants and Animals, will be playing a one-off show at The Rock Shop on Dec 7.
